UK, Germany elevate defence cooperation with new pact

On October 23, the United Kingdom and Germany will formalize an enhanced defence partnership agreement in London.

This development was announced by the UK Ministry of Defence, Caliber.Az reports via UK media.

The agreement, known as the "Trinity House Agreement," aims to increase the frequency of joint military exercises on NATO's eastern flank, foster collaboration in drone production, and ensure the joint protection of underwater infrastructure in the North Sea.

A key provision of the pact includes the periodic deployment of German Air Force Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime reconnaissance aircraft to Lossiemouth Air Base in northeastern Scotland, which is intended "to protect the North Atlantic." This marks a historic moment, as German military pilots will conduct flights over the UK for the first time since World War II.

In addition, the agreement outlines plans for the joint development of long-range missiles, which will have a range surpassing existing models currently in service with both nations. The UK Ministry of Defence also noted Germany's interest in purchasing British Sting Ray torpedoes, designed for use on maritime reconnaissance aircraft.

The signing of the agreement will be officiated by Defence Ministers John Healey of the UK and Boris Pistorius of Germany.

Furthermore, the document includes plans to establish a factory in the UK dedicated to producing artillery barrels for the German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall. This initiative is expected to result in an investment of approximately £500 million ($650 million) into the British economy and create over 400 jobs.

Minister Healey characterized the agreement as a "significant moment" in the relationship between the UK and Germany. He stated, "It provides an unprecedented level of cooperation with the German armed forces and industry, benefiting our shared security, ensuring our prosperity, and contributing to the protection of our common values while strengthening our defence industrial bases."
