UK launches preparedness campaign amid cyberattack concerns

15 July 2026 09:52

The British government is preparing a public awareness campaign advising households to stockpile essential supplies, including food and water, in case of a major cyberattack, according to The Telegraph.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to strengthen the country's preparedness for potential national emergencies and security threats.

Later this year, ministers are expected to launch a nationwide information campaign encouraging citizens to prepare for emergency situations by maintaining supplies of food, medicines, and other basic necessities.

Prime Minister’s Chief Secretary Darren Jones said the government is introducing a “national resilience public awareness campaign” to help the public understand simple but important steps to take during emergencies.

Among the scenarios highlighted are cyberattacks that could disrupt access to electricity, water supplies, telecommunications services, or the ability to purchase food from local stores.

The UK government also plans to conduct a nationwide homeland defence exercise next year, during which hundreds of civil servants will rehearse responses to internal government crises in the event of a hybrid attack attributed to Russia.

The measures come amid growing concerns about potential threats to NATO member states and continued cyberattacks targeting Britain's critical infrastructure.
