UK party leader calls for summoning of US ambassador Over Elon Musk’s controversial comments
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey has called for the US Ambassador to the UK, Jane Hartley, to be summoned to the Foreign Ministry after controversial comments made by businessman Elon Musk regarding British domestic politics.
Musk, who recently expressed support for the removal of Prime Minister Keir Starmer, claimed that the UK’s government should be overthrown, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Davey criticized Musk’s interference, stating, “People have had enough of Elon Musk interfering with our country’s democracy when he clearly knows nothing about Britain. It’s time to summon the US ambassador to ask why an incoming US official is suggesting the UK government should be overthrown.”
He suggested that Hartley be asked to clarify why Musk, who is set to collaborate with businessman Vivek Ramaswamy on a new US government efficiency department under President-elect Donald Trump, would make such provocative statements.
The remarks follow Musk’s assertion that the British people must be freed from Starmer’s government, a comment linked to longstanding sexual abuse allegations in UK towns. Musk claimed Starmer was complicit in the abuse, a charge Starmer denies.
While Starmer insists he initiated prosecutions against the perpetrators, the issue of local authority responses has sparked ongoing controversy.
Davey further warned that Musk's rhetoric highlights the dangers of relying on the Trump administration: "This dangerous and irresponsible rhetoric is further proof that the UK can’t rely on the Trump administration. It’s in our national interest to rebuild trade and security ties with our allies in Europe."
