UK PM says Greenland itself must decide its future
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed support for Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, emphasizing that Greenland’s territorial future should not be decided by a third party.
Speaking to The Guardian, Starmer said: “Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark are to decide the future of Greenland, and only Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.”
"Denmark is a close ally in Europe, it is a Nato ally, and it’s very important the future of Greenland is, as I say, for the Kingdom of Denmark, and for Greenland, and only for Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark."
Starmer added that he fully backs Frederiksen’s stance, calling her remarks about Greenland’s future correct.
Earlier, Frederiksen stressed that Greenland is part of the kingdom and urged the United States to stop threatening the island, responding to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments that the U.S. needed control over Greenland for defence purposes.
