UK police introduce new hijab with magnetic quick release for officers
A British police have introduced a new hijab for officers, designed with a magnetic quick-release feature that allows it to detach easily in a confrontation, reducing the risk of strangulation while maintaining a professional appearance.
Known as the "Blue Light Hijab," the design has gained attention from other emergency services, the National Health Service, and the private sector in the UK, The National writes.
Developed by Detective Sergeant Yassin Desai, founder of the Leicestershire Police Association of Muslim Police, the hijab has been in the works for over 20 years. Desai, who came up with the idea two decades ago, collaborated with Dr. Angela Davies and technician Kay Radford from Leicester’s De Montfort University (DMU) to finalise the design in 2022. After extensive testing, including "combat trials," wear trials, and feedback from Muslim officers, the hijab is now part of the police force’s personal protective equipment.
"It's amazing to think after three years of research and development, we have got the design of this right, and we’re taking it forward together," Desai said. "It’s a great product, it’s safe and protects Muslim women’s dignity."
Leicestershire Police officers have already begun wearing the hijab, which is described as comfortable, safe, and smart. Inspector Marina Waka emphasised its importance for inclusivity:
“It is reassuring to know that this hijab, which will be issued as part of an officer’s personal protective equipment, is comfortable and safe as well as looking smart and professional.”
Trainee officer Hafsah Abba-Gana added, “It is reassuring to know that my faith and my role can work hand in hand, especially as someone who is new to the force.”
