UK politician: Former Labour official Mandelson scandal "distraction"

A senior figure in the UK’s Reform Party has dismissed the political fallout from the Mandelson vetting scandal as a “distraction,” arguing that it diverts attention from issues more pressing to the public.

Robert Jenrick said parliament should focus on everyday concerns rather than the controversy surrounding Peter Mandelson, Caliber.Az reports via UK media. 

“Parliament needs to actually talk about the priorities of the British people. And that is not primarily about the ins and outs of Peter Mandelson... It is the cost of living, it is the small boats, it is the cost pressures that people are facing in this country,” Jenrick said.

He added: “It's a distraction and the problem for the prime minister is that he is paralysed.”

Despite downplaying the issue, Jenrick confirmed that his party would support a parliamentary vote to refer Prime Minister Keir Starmer to the privileges committee over allegations he misled lawmakers.

He was sharply critical of Starmer’s handling of the situation, saying: “He has behaved appallingly in this scandal, and he deserves everything that he gets, frankly. I want to get rid of Keir Starmer.”

The controversy stems from an investigation launched after documents released by the US Department of Justice suggested Mandelson may have shared sensitive government information with convicted sex offender, late financier Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as business secretary under former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Mandelson was arrested in London in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office and later released on bail after several hours of questioning.
