UK Prime Minister cautions on Ukraine peace deal reports

During a session in the House of Commons, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed reports that Ukraine had agreed to a peace deal with the United States, stressing that the situation remains fluid and that he was relying on secondhand information.

“My best understanding is that they have agreed to a draft that emerged in Geneva,” Starmer told MPs, Sky News reports.

“This isn’t a new set of proposals or agreements in any way.” He emphasized that he would need to verify the latest developments before drawing conclusions. 

Asked about breaking news suggesting Ukraine had accepted a US-brokered peace plan, Starmer noted he believed the reports likely reflect updates to the Geneva talks rather than a full, finalized agreement. “I suspect it won’t be the whole of the agreement that needs to be reached,” he said. “I’ll have a look at the report and look behind the headline. If there is anything material to report, I will of course do it.”

According to US media citing an official, Ukraine has agreed in principle to the peace proposal brokered by the Trump administration, with minor details still pending. Washington had initially presented a 28-point plan to Kyiv last week, which was followed by counterproposals drafted during weekend talks in Geneva.

European allies, who had submitted their own counterproposal to the 28-point plan, have convened a series of urgent meetings in recent days to remain aligned with the negotiations.

The developments coincide with reports that US and Russian officials, including US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, were conducting separate talks in Abu Dhabi, underscoring ongoing diplomatic efforts to advance the Ukraine peace process.
