UK Queen Elizabeth II becomes world's second longest-reigning monarch

12 June 2022 20:36

British Queen Elizabeth II has become the second longest-reigning monarch in history.

Her Majesty surpassed King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) of Thailand on this list, who ruled from 1927 to 2016 - 70 years and 126 days, according to Sky News.

Thus, a little less than two years separate the 96-year-old queen from the absolute record. The first line in this list is occupied by the French king Louis XIV (1638-1715). He reigned for 72 years and 110 days.

In September 2015, Elizabeth II surpassed the record of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) for the longest stay on the throne. She is also the oldest sitting head of state and holds the world record for female reign.

At the same time, Sky News does not mention the story of the reign of Sobuza II, the king of Swaziland (now Eswatini). He was declared paramount chief at the age of four months and reigned for 82 years and 254 days.

During her reign, Elizabeth II visited more than 100 countries and took part in more than 21,000 events. She gave royal assent to 4,000 laws and received more than 112 world leaders who came to London on state visits. During her reign, 14 British prime ministers and 14 US presidents have been replaced.
