Polish FM urges Europe to brace for US disengagement, embrace strategic autonomy
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has issued a stark warning about Europe's geopolitical future, urging the European Union to brace for a potential decline in American interest not only in Ukraine but in the continent as a whole.
Sikorski emphasized the need for strategic autonomy, suggesting that the EU now faces an "existential choice" amid shifting global dynamics, Caliber.Az reports, citing French media.
"We should prepare ourselves for the fact that the USA will completely lose interest not only in Ukraine but also in Europe," he wrote.
Europeans may find the message unpalatable, but we cannot afford the luxury of selective hearing. We must confront the very real possibility that the United States may eventually disengage not only from Ukraine but from Europe altogether.
According to Sikorski, the geopolitical landscape is pushing Europe toward a pivotal decision: either emerge as a sovereign power capable of shaping global events or risk marginalization on the world stage. “It is a choice between participating in world history alongside the major powers or condemning itself to alienation,” he stated.
Sikorski noted that the EU has already begun moving toward greater self-reliance, pointing to significant increases in defence spending across member states. This trend reflects a broader recognition within Europe of the need to bolster its own security capabilities in response to both Russia’s aggression and the possibility of diminished transatlantic support.
