Germany urges Europe to lead Ukraine peace efforts amid declining US engagement
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called on Europe to take a leading role in efforts to end the war in Ukraine, arguing that European countries have a responsibility to drive diplomatic initiatives as U.S. engagement appears to be diminishing.
In an interview with the RND editorial network, Wadephul said Europe should seize the opportunity to play a more active role in advancing peace efforts.
"Recently, the United States has shown less interest in the Ukrainian issue. Therefore, we Europeans not only have the opportunity but also a clear responsibility to take the initiative," he said.
Wadephul noted that Germany, France and the United Kingdom—often referred to as the "E3" or "European trio"—have already put forward a proposal aimed at advancing diplomatic efforts.
He stressed that Berlin was not committed to any single negotiation format and would take into account the interests of its partners as well as broader European priorities.
"The most important thing now is to finally find a path to dialogue," Wadephul said, responding to a question about Europe's influence in peace negotiations amid perceptions that the United States has taken the lead.
The German foreign minister also emphasised that diplomacy remains the only lasting way to end the conflict.
"All military conflicts sooner or later end through diplomatic means. I am determined to achieve this as soon as possible," he said.
