UK regulator launches probe into Telegram over child safety concerns
Britain’s communications regulator Ofcom has opened an investigation into Telegram over the possible spread of child sexual abuse material and the use of the platform for online grooming of minors.
It has also launched investigations into platforms Teen Chat and Chat Avenue, Caliber.Az reports, citing Reuters.
The regulator is examining whether the services are complying with their obligations to protect children from harassment and exploitation online.
According to the watchdog, concerns were raised following engagements with the companies over the effectiveness of their safeguards for underage users in the UK.
The regulator said platforms must strengthen oversight and safety mechanisms or risk facing sanctions under the UK’s Online Safety Act.
