UK's Starmer commits to recognising Palestine in meeting with President Abbas
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in London, discussing urgent steps to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas.
According to a statement from Starmer’s office, the talks focused on alleviating “horrific suffering and hunger” in the enclave, Caliber.Az reports via Israeli media.
Abbas welcomed Britain’s pledge to recognise a Palestinian state before the upcoming UN General Assembly session later this month, should Israel fail to shift its current course.
Downing Street said the meeting was part of the prime minister’s ongoing efforts to promote a political solution to the conflict.
Both leaders agreed that Hamas would play “absolutely no role” in Palestine’s future governance and stressed the need for a long-term resolution.
