Lithuania reopens border crossing with Belarus
25 October 2025 14:29
Lithuania has resumed traffic through the Šalčininkai (Benyakoni) border checkpoint with Belarus, roughly 14 hours after it was closed due to an incident involving weather balloons.
Prime Minister Inga Rūginienė announced that authorities had temporarily shut down two border crossings with Belarus until noon on October 25 as a precautionary measure following the incident, Caliber.Az reports via Belarussian media.
The closure affected traffic at the Šalčininkai and another nearby checkpoint, causing brief disruptions in cross-border movement.
This marks the second such incident involving weather balloons along the Lithuanian-Belarusian border within a week.
