UK sets course to modernize defence nuclear fuel production

12 November 2024 19:31

UK Defence Secretary John Healey has unveiled plans to explore options for re-establishing a nuclear fuel cycle dedicated to defence purposes.

This initiative is part of the ongoing modernisation of the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE), which includes steps to collaborate with industry partners and assess the best methods to meet the program's requirements, Caliber.Az reports referring to foreign media.

“The UK is exploring options to re-establish a nuclear-fuel cycle for reactor fuel for defence purposes,” Healey explained. He stressed the Government’s commitment, stating, “The Government is committed to modernising defence nuclear-fuel production under the Defence Nuclear Enterprise. We are commencing engagement with industry to develop options for how this requirement can be delivered.”

Healey also reaffirmed the UK’s dedication to its nuclear responsibilities and international obligations, asserting, “The UK takes its nuclear responsibilities and obligations seriously. This fuel production cycle will be fully consistent with the UK’s international obligations, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).” He further clarified that the project would uphold the UK’s voluntary moratorium on the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons, a policy that has been in effect since 1995.

In line with the UK’s commitment to responsible nuclear practices, Healey added, “The UK will continue to maintain the highest standards of safeguarding of civil nuclear materials, ensuring a separation from defence materials and complying with our obligations under the UK’s Voluntary Offer Agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency.”

The Defence Nuclear Enterprise is a network of organisations responsible for maintaining and operating the UK’s nuclear deterrent and submarine forces. It coordinates various entities to ensure that submarines, supporting infrastructure, and specialized personnel are sustained to meet defence standards.

As part of this role, the DNE works closely with suppliers across the UK, focusing on secure, efficient, and technology-driven support for nuclear capabilities. These partnerships are vital to fulfilling the mission of deterring national security threats, and supporting highly skilled jobs across the country while adhering to rigorous security and governance standards.
