Media: UK weighs deploying drones, minesweepers in Strait of Hormuz Amid Iranian threats
15 March 2026 16:34
Britain is considering the deployment of thousands of interceptor drones and minesweepers in the Strait of Hormuz to protect oil shipping routes amid threats from Iran, The Times reports.
The decision follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for allies to ensure the safe passage of tankers in the region.
“There are additional options we’re starting to consider that we could deploy alongside allies,” UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said.
According to the report, the options under consideration include autonomous drones for detecting naval mines and advanced anti-drone systems known as “Octopus,” developed for Ukraine and potentially applicable against Iranian Shahed drones.
