Ukraine detains suspected Russian agent in Donetsk

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced the arrest of another alleged agent of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

The suspect was detained in Donetsk region, Ukraine, SBU stated.

“According to the investigation, the suspect transmitted coordinates for new strikes on Kramatorsk and tracked Ukrainian armoured vehicles for subsequent arson. The perpetrator turned out to be a member of a local formation who had previously engaged in looting at sites of enemy strikes.

The agent came to the attention of Russian intelligence through Telegram channels, where he posted comments in support of Russia. In exchange for money, he adjusted strikes on the district centre and set fire to military equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. To guide air strikes, the suspect moved around the frontline city and observed locations where personnel of the Defence Forces were concentrated. He also tracked and set fire to an armoured vehicle of the Armed Forces of Ukraine performing combat missions on the front line.

SBU officers detained him at his place of residence. At the same time, security measures were implemented for Defence Forces facilities in the area of enemy intelligence activity.

During the arrest, a smartphone used to communicate with his handler from the Russian Main Directorate was seized. Investigators have charged the suspect with high treason under martial law. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property,” the SBU said in a statement.
