Ukraine dismisses US pressure claims, highlights stronger ties

01 April 2025 17:40

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has dismissed suggestions of U.S. pressure on Kyiv, instead highlighting the continued strengthening of bilateral relations.

Speaking at a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Sybiha underscored the importance of Ukraine’s partnership with Washington in achieving a just and comprehensive peace, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.

"It is not about pressure but rather about the development and intensification of our relations with the United States. We see a great opportunity to accelerate efforts aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive peace for Ukraine," Sybiha stated.

The Ukrainian minister stressed that a fair and lasting peace remains a strategic goal for both Kyiv and Washington, aligning with U.S. national interests as well as those of the transatlantic community. He reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to deepening diplomatic engagement with the United States at all levels.

"We strongly hope that these efforts will lead to the desired outcome of achieving a just and comprehensive peace," he added.

The remarks come amid ongoing discussions regarding military and financial support for Ukraine from its Western allies. While some reports have suggested that Kyiv is facing increased pressure from Washington regarding its military strategy and negotiations with Russia, Sybiha’s comments aim to dispel such notions and reinforce the narrative of a strong, cooperative partnership.

Germany’s Annalena Baerbock, for her part, reaffirmed Berlin’s unwavering support for Ukraine, emphasizing the need for continued unity among Western allies in assisting Kyiv.

The press conference follows a series of high-level diplomatic engagements between Ukraine and its partners, as Kyiv continues to seek long-term security assurances and sustained international backing in its defense against Russian aggression.

Sybiha also stated that the agreement with the US on rare earth metals should not contradict Ukraine's path to the European Union, which is one of the fundamental positions of Kyiv.

"This agreement, on which we began negotiations, in no way contradicts our European integration path, our integration into the European Union," Sybiha said.
