Ukraine explores localization of F-16 maintenance with Lockheed Martin support
Ukraine is advancing efforts to localize the maintenance and technical support of F-16 fighter jets within its borders, a move that promises to enhance the operational autonomy of the Ukrainian Air Force. This strategic initiative could be realized through a potential partnership between the Ukrainian defence conglomerate Ukroboronprom and the American aerospace giant Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the F-16.
Discussions on this collaboration took place at the MSPO 2025 defence exhibition held in Poland, where senior representatives from Ukrainian Defence Industry JSC engaged with Lockheed Martin officials, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The core focus of these talks centered on establishing frameworks for comprehensive technical support and aircraft maintenance capabilities domestically.
If realized, the partnership would grant Ukraine’s defence industry unprecedented access to Lockheed Martin’s technical expertise, proprietary knowledge, and advanced technologies. This would significantly bolster the country’s ability to conduct sophisticated maintenance and servicing of the F-16 fleet, potentially streamlining operational readiness and reducing reliance on external support.
While full localization would mark a substantial leap forward in Ukraine’s defence autonomy, certain critical components and parts are expected to continue being sourced from the United States due to the complexity and sensitivity of the systems involved.
The move aligns with broader efforts to modernize Ukraine’s military infrastructure and enhance self-sufficiency amid ongoing security challenges. Localizing F-16 maintenance not only promises to improve the sustainability of the Air Force’s advanced platforms but also positions Ukraine’s defence sector as a more capable and resilient partner in international defence cooperation.
