Ukraine, Germany discuss defence cooperation, including laser weapons

Ukraine and Germany have discussed cooperation on defence projects, including potential applications of laser weapons, during a phone call between their defence officials, Ukraine’s defence ministry said on April 11.

Ukraine’s Minister of Defence and Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov held talks with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, according to a statement from Kyiv.

The two sides discussed joint defence initiatives planned for the near future, including strengthening air defence systems, additional funding for deep-strike and medium-range drones, and the development of joint technological solutions.

A separate focus of the conversation was innovation in defence technologies, including prospects for cooperation in laser weapons systems, the ministry said.

Fedorov thanked Germany for its continued support, saying Berlin plays a key role in protecting Ukraine’s infrastructure and population, particularly during winter periods.

He also highlighted the importance of deliveries of PAC-3 missile systems and Germany’s participation in international defence initiatives.

The officials also discussed data-sharing programmes and broader technological cooperation aimed at strengthening defence capabilities on both sides, the statement added.
