Ukraine introduces legal framework for dual citizenship
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a landmark law officially introducing the institution of multiple citizenship in Ukraine.
The new legislation allows Ukrainian nationals to hold foreign citizenship without losing their Ukrainian nationality, provided the second country is on a list approved by the government, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
The law also grants Ukrainians the right to obtain citizenship of certain foreign states without the requirement to renounce their Ukrainian citizenship, again dependent on a government-approved list of countries.
As part of a major effort to deepen engagement with the global Ukrainian community, the new legislation establishes an expedited pathway to Ukrainian citizenship for foreign nationals of Ukrainian descent.
Additionally, the law facilitates expedited citizenship for foreign nationals serving in Ukraine's armed forces and for individuals facing political persecution in their home countries.
