Ukraine ready to increase biomethane supplies to EU

Ukraine is ready to increase biomethane supplies to the European Union, with the first deliveries of biogas to the bloc already completed, according to the press service of Ukraine’s Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.

As part of efforts to expand these supplies and facilitate Ukrainian biomethane exports, Ukraine’s Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotskyi held talks in Brussels with Mechthild Wörsdörfer, Deputy Director-General of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy. 

The meeting focused on removing regulatory barriers to Ukrainian biomethane exports to the EU and integrating Ukraine into the Union Database, the European system for tracking renewable fuels and biomethane.

“Ukraine already has the necessary production and infrastructure base to increase biomethane supplies to the EU. Ukrainian legislation has been harmonised with the requirements of RED III, producers are undergoing certification in line with European standards, and Ukraine’s gas transmission system is integrated with the EU gas network,” the ministry stated.

Ukraine currently has operational biomethane production facilities commissioned in recent years, while a number of new projects are at various stages of development. Ukrainian producers have already carried out the first test deliveries of biomethane to the EU.
