Ukraine seeks EBRD support to bolster energy security amid Russian strikes
Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Denys Shmyhal, held an online meeting with Odile Renaud-Basso, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), to discuss strengthening the country’s energy security and exploring additional sources of financing for natural gas imports.
Shmyhal said that Ukraine is in the final stages of securing an €85 million grant from a European country through EBRD mechanisms to purchase additional natural gas. He expressed gratitude to international partners for their support in this effort, Caliber.Az reports per Energy Ministry.
During the meeting, Shmyhal also described the current challenging situation in Ukraine’s energy system, caused by damage from Russian strikes. He highlighted that repair crews are working continuously to restore electricity and heating supply across the country.
The minister emphasised the critical need for continued financial assistance from the EBRD to Ukrainian energy companies, including Ukrenergo and Ukrhydroenergo. He noted that such support is essential for carrying out repairs, acquiring equipment, and implementing new solutions to ensure that citizens have access to light and heat.
