Ukraine shoots down 63 Russian drones in nighttime defence PHOTO
The Ukrainian Air Force reported a large-scale attack by Russian forces over the night of December 17 to 18 involving 82 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including approximately 50 Shahed-type strike drones.
Ukraine’s air defences successfully intercepted or neutralised 63 drones, while 19 strike drones hit 12 locations, causing damage in multiple areas, according to the Air Force's press service cited by Caliber.Az.
Additionally, debris from downed drones was recorded in eight other regions, highlighting the widespread nature of the attack.

Ukrainian authorities continue to assess the full impact of the strikes, as tensions remain high along the frontlines.
Russia has intensified its use of low-cost, long-range Shahed drones (rebranded as Geran-2 in Russian service) throughout 2025 to target Ukrainian energy infrastructure, civilian sites, and military positions, aiming to overwhelm air defences and disrupt power supplies ahead of winter. These drones, often launched in swarms from bases in Russia and occupied Crimea, are designed for one-way strikes with explosive warheads.
