Ukraine signals “new page” in relations with Hungary amid leadership changes
Ukraine has expressed readiness to reset relations with Hungary following upcoming changes in Budapest’s leadership, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said.
Speaking to journalists, Sybiha confirmed he had already exchanged text messages with Anita Orbán, who is set to become Hungary’s new foreign minister. He described Kyiv as open to constructive dialogue and broader cooperation, Caliber.Az reports per Ukrainian media.
“We are ready to turn a new page with the Hungarian side and are interested in doing so,” Sybiha said, adding that Ukraine is prepared to discuss all outstanding issues “constructively and reasonably, based on European standards.”
He emphasised that Kyiv seeks mutually beneficial cooperation with Hungary in support of both countries’ interests and a shared European future.
Hungary’s incoming prime minister, Péter Magyar, has already named several members of his future cabinet, including Orbán as foreign minister. She is not related to former prime minister Viktor Orbán and previously distanced herself from the ruling Fidesz party over policy disagreements, including its reliance on Russian energy imports.
In parallel, Sybiha addressed Ukraine’s expectations regarding Bulgaria, expressing hope that Sofia will maintain consistent support for Kyiv. He highlighted the importance of backing Ukraine’s territorial integrity and its bid for membership in the European Union.
The remarks come after the “Progressive Bulgaria” coalition, led by Rumen Radev, won recent early parliamentary elections. Some media reports have suggested that Radev has shown a degree of affinity toward Moscow, raising questions about the future direction of Bulgaria’s foreign policy.
