Ukraine targets 2026–2027 for domestic anti-ballistic system

06 August 2026 16:53

Ukraine aims to develop a domestic anti-ballistic missile system by 2026–2027, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said following a meeting on strengthening ballistic defence and advancing the FREYJA programme.

“We expect that by 2026–2027 Ukraine will achieve the necessary results,” Zelenskyy said.

He described the creation of a national system to defend against ballistic missiles as a key priority, noting that only a limited number of countries have successfully developed such capabilities.

Zelenskyy added that Ukraine has the necessary scientific base and expertise, and that domestic defence manufacturers have already reached the level required to implement the project.

The announcement followed discussions focused on preparations for ballistic defence and the implementation of the FREYJA anti-ballistic programme.
