Ukrainian authorities uncover $4‑million electricity fraud PHOTO
Ukrainian authorities have exposed a scheme involving the theft of over 168 million hryvnias ($4 million) worth of electricity, the Office of the Prosecutor General announced.
Investigators identified three suspects involved in the fraud, which caused significant losses for National Energy Company Ukrenergo, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Prosecutor General’s Office.
According to law enforcement, a commercial enterprise received electricity without payment, while a controlled supplier avoided legal procurement by exploiting system imbalances—instances where electricity was consumed but not paid for, with the difference covered by the energy system.
A Ukrenergo official was also implicated for deliberately ignoring violations despite having the authority to act.
As a result, more than 82,000 MWh of electricity was released without proper compensation. Searches yielded documents and draft records confirming the existence of the scheme.
