Ukrainian border guard breaks ranks during Romania meeting Restroom break turns into escape and asylum bid

A Ukrainian border guard requested asylum in Romania during an official meeting with Romanian counterparts and decided not to return, according to reports from Odesa-based sources, as cited by Ukrainian media.

The 28-year-old major from Izmail was attending a border coordination meeting between Ukrainian and Romanian representatives as part of a joint investigation into the detention of a Ukrainian citizen. 

At one point, he excused himself to go to the restroom and subsequently approached Romanian border guards to request refugee status.

An internal investigation into the incident is currently underway in Ukraine.
