Ukrainian delegation travels to US for talks with Trump envoy

A Ukrainian delegation is travelling to the United States for further discussions on a peace plan promoted by President Donald Trump.

The group includes Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council, and First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

They are expected to meet US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner in Florida. Witkoff is also scheduled to lead a US delegation to Russia for talks next week.

Last month, a phone call between Witkoff and a senior Kremlin official reportedly revealed that the US envoy suggested ways Russia could present a plan for Ukraine.

The US recently issued an ultimatum for Kyiv to agree to terms before Thanksgiving, in a draft deal widely seen as favouring Moscow. European nations have largely been excluded from detailed negotiations and are only involved where their input is critical, such as defining security guarantees with Washington.

Despite claims of progress, negotiations face persistent obstacles, with Russian demands for Ukrainian troop withdrawals in Donetsk firmly rejected by Kyiv.

The trip comes amid domestic pressure on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following a corruption scandal. His top aide, Andriy Yermak, who had been leading the peace talks, resigned on November 28.
