Ukrainian leader urges Trump for renewed US support in high-stakes phone call

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump held a significant phone conversation on July 4, as Kyiv continues to navigate a critical pause in US military assistance, particularly concerning key air defence systems.

The call was confirmed by Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, who described the exchange as “a very important and meaningful conversation between the presidents.” He added that further details of the discussion would be made public shortly, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.

The conversation took place in the context of a temporary halt in the delivery of US defence support, including missiles for Ukraine’s Patriot air defence systems, which are vital to the country’s ability to repel continued Russian aerial attacks.

President Zelenskyy had previously expressed hopes for a renewed commitment from Washington, underscoring the urgency of sustaining military support amid escalating hostilities. "Ukraine counts on the extension of assistance from the United States," Zelenskyy said ahead of the call, pointing specifically to Patriot missile resupplies as a top priority.
