Ukrainian president arrives in Rome ahead of Coalition of the Willing summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Rome on July 9 ahead of a high-level meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, scheduled for July 10 in the Italian capital.
The gathering will bring together leaders from countries considering further support measures for Ukraine, including potential deterrent deployments, though such moves remain contingent on a ceasefire with Russia, Caliber.Az reprots per Ukrainian media.
The Élysée Palace confirmed that the meeting will touch on the possible dispatch of deterrent forces to Ukraine, but only after active hostilities cease. For now, deployment of European troops remains off the table due to the ongoing war.
According to reports, Zelenskyy is also expected to meet with Italian President Sergio Mattarella during his visit. The bilateral meeting is set for 5:00 PM Kyiv time.
British Secretary of Defence John Gieve said the Coalition’s objective is to bolster Ukraine's defence by securing its airspace, territorial waters, and ground forces, as well as supporting frontline fighters.
The previous Coalition meeting was held in Kyiv in May, where key European leaders—including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Labour leader Keir Starmer, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and French President Emmanuel Macron—discussed enhanced support for Ukraine.
