Ukrainian president considers results of NATO summit as “good”

12 July 2023 16:32

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that he considers the results of the NATO summit “not ideal, but good”.

He made the comments during a speech at an event broadcast by the President's Office, Caliber.Az reports.

“The results of the summit are good, but if there was an invitation, they would be perfect,” the Ukrainian leader said.

He thanked the members of the alliance for "important steps" and for the fact that Ukraine was offered security guarantees on the way to NATO and "not instead of" membership in the bloc.

On his Telegram channel, Zelenskyy said that "NATO will give Ukraine security, and Ukraine will make the alliance stronger." He thanked Canada “for reinforcing the soldiers with armoured vehicles”, mentioning “powerful agreements”, and also announced “an agreement on additional Patriot launchers and missiles for them from Germany”, on the supply of long-range weapons by Great Britain, 30 Bushmaster armoured personnel carriers from Australia, etc.

Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine understands why some countries are afraid to talk about its membership in NATO. This requires the appropriate conditions, he said during a joint briefing with Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

According to the president, the Ukrainian side understands that it will not be able to become the next member of the North Atlantic Alliance as long as the war with Russia continues on its territory.

“We are adequate people, we understand that some are really afraid to talk about our membership now, no one wants a World War. This is understandable and logical... Ukraine understands that it cannot be a member of NATO while the war is going on. We met with many people today, Ukraine will become a member of NATO when the conditions are really appropriate. I understand by this that when it is safe on our land,” Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainian president underlined that at a meeting with US President Joe Biden, he will ask for long-range weapons.

He thanked the US for providing cluster munitions, despite the fact that many in the US were against the transfer of such weapons.

At the same time, Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine still needs long-range weapons.

“We need long-range weapons, this shortage has not gone away, and I will raise this issue,” he said.

In addition, according to Zelenskyy, at the meeting with Biden, Ukraine's membership in NATO will be discussed. He noted that he was not going to find arguments to convince the American president of the need to support the accession of Ukraine.

“This is the security of the east of Europe. The Alliance needs us no less than vice versa,” he said, adding that he is convinced that after the war Ukraine will be in NATO.
