Ukrainian women increasingly enter male-dominated professions

Women in Ukraine are increasingly taking up professions dominated by men, Ukrainian Deputy Economy Minister Dariia Marchak said.

“There is no reason why a woman today cannot operate a machine or drive a car herself. Whereas in the past this required brute male strength, today, thanks to technological advances, a great many professions can be mastered without the need for great physical strength,” Marchak said, Ukrainian media reports.

Marchak did not cite mobilisation as a reason for the shift toward traditionally male-dominated occupations.

The Ukrainian government has been working to retrain women for such professions since 2024.

At the time, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada linked the initiative to a shortage of men in the labour market amid mobilisation.
