Ukrainians arrested in Warsaw over spy, hacking equipment
Polish police have arrested three Ukrainian nationals after discovering spy detection devices and sophisticated hacking equipment in their vehicle.
The men, aged 39, 42, and 43, were stopped during a traffic check on Senatorska Street in central Warsaw, Caliber.Az reports via Polish media.
According to Sergeant Kacper Wojteczko of the Śródmieście police station, the men were unable to explain why they had acquired the equipment. "When asked more specific questions, they appeared to forget English and pretended not to understand what was being said," he said.
The officers found items capable of breaching computer networks and interfering with critical information systems. Confiscated equipment included a spy device detector, advanced hacking tools, antennas, laptops, numerous SIM cards, routers, portable hard drives, and cameras.
The Ukrainians told police they were “travelling across Europe” and had arrived in Poland only a few hours earlier, with plans to continue on to Lithuania.
Following their arrest, the men were charged with fraud, computer fraud, and possession of devices and software intended to commit offences, including attempts to damage data of particular importance to national defence.
A court approved a three-month remand in custody, while police continue to investigate the circumstances of their visit to Poland and the purpose of the equipment.
