UN-Habitat chief: Utilities recognised as stakeholder group at WUF13
Utilities were recognised as a separate stakeholder group for the first time at the World Urban Forum (WUF13), Executive Director of UN-Habitat Anacláudia Rossbach said during the Assembly of the Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance held in Baku.
Speaking at the event, Rossbach highlighted the growing role of water supply and sanitation operators in shaping urbanisation policy, strengthening climate resilience, and advancing sustainable development.
“This week in Baku, the voice of utilities is being heard on a broader urbanisation platform,” Rossbach emphasised.
She stressed that the development of modern cities cannot rely solely on infrastructure investment, underlining the importance of strengthening institutional and operational capacity.
“Change will come from utilities, governments and partners. It is necessary to invest not only in infrastructure, but also in capacity development. Strong operators, supportive policies and long-term partnerships are key conditions for delivering sustainable services,” she said.
