UN-Habitat official proposes “One UN” urban recovery model for Africa At WUF13

20 May 2026 16:05

A new model for urban recovery could be introduced across Africa, a representative of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has said during a side event of the 13th World Urban Forum (World Urban Forum 13) in Baku.

Tarek Osseiran of UN-Habitat noted that a methodological guide could be developed to demonstrate how the “One UN” approach might be applied in Libya and extended to other parts of the region, Caliber.Az reports per local media

He stressed that such a framework would move beyond theoretical cooperation or jointly designed projects, becoming meaningful only through practical implementation in collaboration with local communities.

He added that the combined work of UNICEF, UN Women, and UN-Habitat had provided a multi-dimensional perspective on urban recovery challenges. According to him, each agency contributes distinct mandates and expertise, which, when integrated, can better serve the well-being of residents in vulnerable urban areas.

Osseiran further explained that this coordinated approach had been applied in one of Tripoli’s most critical neighbourhoods, Bab al-Tabbaneh, where the initiative was implemented as part of broader efforts to support urban recovery and community resilience.
