Hormuz shutdown risks humanitarian disaster as fertiliser flows collapse UN sounds alarm
26 April 2026 15:23
The continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz is triggering growing concern over global food security, with the UN Office for Project Services warning that disruptions to fertiliser supply chains could lead to a major humanitarian crisis.
The executive director of the agency, Jorge Moreira da Silva, cautioned that prolonged maritime instability may drive millions of people into worsening cycles of hunger and potential famine, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He also noted that raw material costs for fertiliser production have surged to record highs, stressing the urgent need for coordinated diplomatic efforts to safeguard global supply routes.
