UN official hails Azerbaijan’s role in global environmental, urban agenda
Azerbaijan’s hosting of major international events such as the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) and the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) demonstrates the government’s serious approach to addressing legal and environmental challenges, said Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat.
Speaking via video message at the 2026 World Environment Day (WED) in Baku, organized in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Rossbach, praised Azerbaijan’s role in advancing the global agenda, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
She noted that local communities emphasize housing as a pillar of sustainable urban development, calling for inclusive, accessible, affordable, and context-appropriate solutions.
“This approach requires new commitments to nature-based solutions, the creation of healthy ecosystems for greener urban spaces, and strengthened resilience,” Rossbach said. “Human settlements should not only reduce environmental impact but also build sustainable communities.”
