UN predicts sharp decline in Ukraine's population by 2100
The United Nations has forecasted a drastic reduction in Ukraine's population to just 15.3 million by the year 2100.
This prediction comes as part of the UN's "World Population Prospects 2024" report, underscoring a significant demographic shift, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
As of early 2024, Ukraine's population stands at approximately 37 million, highlighting a stark contrast to the projected figures for the end of the century. The report also anticipates a global population peak of 10.3 billion by 2084, followed by a decline to 10.2 billion by 2100, alongside an expected average life expectancy of 81.7 years.
Ella Libanova, Director of the Institute of Demography and Social Research at Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences, further detailed that by 2033, Ukraine's population is unlikely to exceed 35 million. She emphasized that these figures refer specifically to individuals residing within Ukraine's 1991 borders. To stabilize the population at around 30 million, the country would need to attract approximately 300,000 migrants annually, according to her estimates.
This forecast underscores significant challenges and implications for Ukraine's future demographic landscape, prompting discussions on potential policy responses and demographic strategies in the coming decades.
