UN prepares initiative for safe passage of fertiliser ships through Strait of Hormuz
The United Nations is working on a diplomatic initiative to ensure the safe passage of vessels carrying fertilisers through the Strait of Hormuz.
The potential closure of the waterway is already causing fertiliser shortages ahead of the key spring planting season for crops, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
A source familiar with the UN initiative said an urgent solution is needed.
The source noted that some farmers in Latin America are already refraining from planting corn for a second cycle, while African farmers risk significant crop losses without fertilisers.
Over the past two weeks, “extensive meetings” have been held in New York involving relevant member states to develop and implement the mechanism, Juliette Touma, Director of Communications at UNOPS, said.
