UN rules out concessions to Taliban on women's work Afghanistan

06 April 2023 11:53

The UN mission in Afghanistan does not intend to make concessions in negotiations with the Taliban on the issue of women's work.

The statement came from the deputy head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, Humanitarian Coordinator Ramiz Alakbarov, TASS reports.

"We continue to actively communicate with the actual authorities [of Afghanistan]. I want to make it clear - there can be no compromise on the principles of our work," he said.

According to him, this issue was discussed at a meeting of the UN mission leadership and representatives of the Taliban on April 5 in Kabul, but so far it has not been possible to come to a decision.

Alakbarov confirmed that women who have Afghan citizenship and work as part of the UN mission do not go to work, as a sign of solidarity with them, men working in the UN mission in Afghanistan also do not go to work. Alakbarov could not specify when the staff of the UN mission will return to work. "You're asking me when it's going to happen. I would like to say that tomorrow [April 6], but tomorrow it won't happen. I do not know if it will happen on Saturday or Sunday, but it will happen," he said, answering the relevant question.

At the same time, Alakbarov noted that the UN mission in Afghanistan will continue to work.

"We will work and help the people of Afghanistan," the UN stressed.

The UN representative also explained that representatives of other countries in the mission in Afghanistan have the opportunity to work. "We will work where we can work and where we can help, in accordance with our principles," he said.
