UN secretary-general congratulates Trump on winning US presidential election
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has congratulated Republican Donald Trump on his victory in the election and expressed hope for constructive cooperation with the new administration.
"I congratulate newly elected President Trump and reaffirm my belief that the partnership between the US and the UN is fundamental to global diplomacy. The UN is ready to work constructively with the new administration to address the serious challenges facing our world," the statement reads, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Guterres also thanked the US people "for their active participation in the democratic process."
Voting in the US presidential election concluded on November 6 morning. Although the official results have not been finalized yet, Fox News projections indicate that Donald Trump has already secured 277 electoral votes, surpassing the necessary 270.
Trump has already declared himself the 47th president of the US. Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson called him the elected head of state, and congratulatory messages have begun to pour in from foreign leaders.
