United States cuts resettlement programs for Afghans
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is reducing the State Department office established to resettle 250,000 Afghans in the United States.
According to The Washington Post, amid this, Afghans who have cooperated with American and international organisations fear deportation back to Afghanistan and retaliation by the Taliban. They currently hold refugee status and have been living since 2021 in 90 countries partnered with the U.S., where they await the processing of their applications for permission to reside and migrate to the United States. Some of these individuals have already lost family members due to Taliban reprisals.
Currently, the processing of refugees’ documents and funding for flights from their host countries to the U.S. have been suspended by Trump’s executive orders. Nevertheless, the U.S. leader recently promised to prevent the repatriation of Afghan nationals currently in the UAE.
