US, allies hold joint naval drills off the coast of Manila
On August 24, Australian, US, Philippine, and Japanese military personnel conducted military exercises involving warships in the South China Sea off the coast of Manila.
Japan involved destroyers Izumo and Samidare in manoeuvres, the United States - ship USS Mobile, Australia - landing helicopter carrier dock Canberra, frigate Anzac, as well as fighter aircraft F-35A, the Philippines - landing ship Davao Del Sur, Kyodo reports.
According to the agency, the Izumo and Samidare destroyers will remain in the port of Manila until August 31.
The exercise is aimed at strengthening cooperation between the militaries of Australia, the US, the Philippines, and Japan. Kyodo also notes that the manoeuvres were organised in connection with China's growing activity in the region.
