US approves $1.8-billion Poseidon plane sale to Denmark amid Greenland tensions

30 December 2025 15:34

The US announced the approval of a $1.8 billion sale of three P-8A Poseidon patrol planes to Denmark, despite renewed tensions over Greenland, which President Donald Trump threatened to annex when he returned to office last January.

The US State Department noted in its notification to Congress that the Boeing sale supports US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a NATO ally that contributes to political stability and economic progress in Europe, Caliber.Az reports via Le Figaro.

This decision comes amid statements by Donald Trump, who spoke about the need for the United States to establish control over Greenland, citing US national security interests. These remarks sparked a strong reaction both in Denmark and within Greenland’s autonomous region, where officials emphasised that the island “is not for sale” and determines its own future.

Tensions were further heightened by Trump’s appointment of a special US envoy to Greenland—Jeff Landry, a former Republican governor of Louisiana.

Meanwhile, Washington continues military-technical cooperation with Copenhagen: a week earlier, the US also approved the sale of missile weapons to Denmark worth about $1 billion.
