US Army Pacific to integrate new units amid transformation efforts

12 October 2024 20:00

The US Army Pacific Command is leading the charge in a transformation initiative aimed at enhancing adaptability to adversary tactics, as articulated by Gen. Charles Flynn, the command's chief.

This initiative, known as “Transforming in Contact,” is part of Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George’s broader strategy to integrate new unit types across the Pacific region, from Hawaii to Alaska, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

Flynn highlighted that this transformation involves the incorporation of new organizations and capabilities that allow for rapid adaptation in the field. He emphasized the connection between tactical and operational forces within a joint operational framework.

Notably, the Pacific Army has established a Theater Information Advantage Detachment (TIAD), the first of its kind, to monitor how adversaries such as China and Russia conduct information warfare. Additionally, the Army has deployed various units, including a Security Force Assistance Brigade and a Theater Fires Element, near China.

The Army has created two of the planned three Multidomain Task Forces (MDTFs) in the Pacific, which have participated in extensive exercises throughout 2024. The Army intends to establish a total of five MDTFs, with one already in Europe and another set for Fort Liberty, North Carolina, to support global rapid response operations.

These MDTFs will operate across all domains—land, air, sea, space, and cyberspace—utilizing advanced capabilities like long-range precision fires. Significant weapon systems, including the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) and Mid-Range Capability missile, will be integrated into these task forces. Recent exercises have already seen the firing of PrSM missiles in Palau and the deployment of the MRC missile to the Philippines.

The Army has also established a Theater Strike Effects Group, which is crucial for modern battlefield operations, allowing for coordinated efforts across various capabilities. Flynn noted the importance of proper organization at the theater level to effectively leverage new technologies and capabilities.

Overall, these developments represent a significant shift in the Army’s operational capabilities tailored specifically to the Pacific region.
