US Army unveils first 3D-printed barracks at Fort Bliss

04 August 2026 04:29

The US Army has inaugurated its first 3D-printed barracks at Fort Bliss, Texas, marking a significant milestone in military infrastructure and the largest robotic construction project undertaken by the Army to date.

According to the US military's Defence Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS), the newly completed building is the first of ten training barracks being constructed under a programme designed to demonstrate the potential of large-scale 3D-printing technology for military housing.

Fort Bliss Commanding General Major General Curtis Taylor said the project represents more than a technological innovation or a cost-saving measure, describing it as an investment in military readiness and the quality of life for service personnel.

Once completed, the ten barracks will provide accommodation for up to 560 soldiers. The buildings are fitted with air conditioning systems and meet the US Army's standardised construction specifications for military facilities.

The Army said the structural printing of all ten buildings was completed in just 58 days, while the entire project is expected to take around nine months from start to finish, with completion scheduled for September.

The initiative follows a successful pilot programme launched at Fort Bliss in 2024, when two 3D-printed buildings were constructed and subsequently brought into service as military accommodation.

According to the US Army, adopting 3D-printing technology has reduced construction costs by approximately 9.3 per cent compared with conventional military building methods, while also accelerating delivery and improving energy efficiency.

Pentagon officials say the technology could play an increasingly important role in future military infrastructure projects, offering a faster and more economical way to provide modern accommodation for troops.
