US automaker Tesla recalls millions of electric vehicles in China
The US automaker Tesla is recalling around 3 million electric vehicles from the Chinese market over potential safety issues related to the colour of their door handles, according to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation.
The administration said the recall covers domestically produced Model 3 vehicles, as well as imported Model X and Model S cars, Caliber.Az reports, citing Bloomberg.
The colour of the vehicles’ mechanical door handles is similar to that of the interior, making them difficult to identify and use. This could affect the ability to open the doors quickly in an emergency.
Tesla plans to address the issue by marking the handles with colored stickers and updating the software for the emergency window-lowering system.
Separately, Tesla announced the recall of 2.73 million Model Y and Model 3 vehicles to improve the driver-attention monitoring system when Autopilot is activated.
The recall is the largest Tesla has carried out in China to date.
Tesla’s Shanghai plant produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y and Model Y L crossovers. Since October 2020, China-made Model 3 vehicles have been exported to European countries.
