US backs $108.1 million deal to sustain Ukraine’s HAWK missile systems

22 May 2026 09:28

The U.S. State Department said on Thursday, May 21, that it has approved a potential $108.1 million sale to Ukraine of equipment intended to support the HAWK missile system.

According to a congressional notification, cited by foreign media, Ukraine requested a package that includes erectable mast trailers, major modifications and maintenance support, spare parts, consumables, accessories, repair and return support, as well as U.S. government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics services for FrankenSAM HAWK missile systems.

The State Department said the proposed sale supports U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the security of Ukraine, which it described as a partner contributing to political and economic stability in Europe.

It added that the package would enhance Ukraine’s ability to address current and future threats by reinforcing its integrated air defence capabilities for self-defence and regional security missions.

The department also stated that Ukraine would have no difficulty integrating the equipment and services into its armed forces, and emphasised that the sale would not alter the basic military balance in the region.

The principal contractor for the program is Sierra Nevada Corporation, based in Englewood, Colorado.

The State Department further noted that the proposed sale would have no adverse impact on U.S. defence readiness.
