US backs Armenia–Türkiye move to lift trade restrictions

14 May 2026 11:50

The United States has expressed support for the lifting of trade restrictions between Armenia and Türkiye, with the US Embassy in Yerevan welcoming the move as a positive step toward regional cooperation.

According to Caliber.Az, citing the embassy, Washington praised the decision by the two countries to ease limitations on bilateral trade.

"The United States welcomes the announcement of the lifting of restrictions on bilateral trade between Armenia and Türkiye. This step demonstrates both countries' commitment to expanding economic connectivity and promoting lasting peace and prosperity in the South Caucasus region. We commend Armenia and Türkiye for their continued efforts toward strengthening cooperation that benefits all peoples of the region," the embassy said.

Armenia and Türkiye do not have formal diplomatic relations, and their shared border has remained closed since the 1990s.

Despite this, the two sides have in recent years engaged in negotiations aimed at normalising relations and reopening transport and trade links.

As part of these efforts, on May 4, Armenia and Türkiye signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly restore the historic Ani Bridge, a landmark from the Silk Road located on their border.

Further signalling a shift toward improved ties, Türkiye on May 13 lifted a restriction on direct trade with Armenia in what has been described as a symbolic gesture.
