US Congress members call for Trump impeachment over Iran situation
Democratic members of the U.S. Congress are discussing a joint demand to impeach President Donald Trump over the war against Iran, Axios reports, citing sources.
The Democrats are considering either initiating a vote on the matter or drafting a request to the Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, one source told the publication. However, the sources noted that these discussions have not yet reached the leadership level.
Many members of Congress have publicly called for Trump’s removal. “Impeach. Remove. This unhinged lunatic must be removed from office” wrote Representative Ilhan Omar. Another Representative, Yassamin Ansari, said that the “25th Amendment exists for a reason” and should be used, as “the fate of U.S. troops, the Iranian people, and the very foundation of our global system are at stake.”
The situation escalated after a post by Trump on Truth Social in which he threatened Iran, stating that “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.”
Axios noted that the Democrats’ plan is unlikely to succeed without significant support from Republicans in Congress, many of whom remain loyal to Trump.
